Four checks before you design anything
1. Demand. Type your idea into Etsy's search bar and read the suggestions: they come from what buyers actually type. Then look at the first page of results. Listings with many reviews tell you the product sells; a page full of new listings with none tells you sellers are guessing too.
2. Margin. Take the entry cost of the product, add Etsy's fees and compare it with the price range on that first page. If the market pays $22 for a product that costs you $11 to make, you have less room than it looks. The fee calculator gives you the real number in seconds.
3. Timing. Many products are seasonal. Publishing weeks before the peak gives Etsy search time to learn your listing; publishing during the peak is usually too late. The seasonal calendar has the dates, and for Christmas the deadline is mid-October.
4. Competition. The number of results is not the whole story. Look at what ranks: if the top listings are old, generic and look alike, a specific, well-made design can still get in.
The main print on demand products, measured
If you do not hold stock, your options are the products your print on demand supplier makes. These are the ones ZEUS measures against the supplier catalogs, with the cheapest blank of each category:
| Product | Entry cost | Print method | Why people buy it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apparel | $11.00 | DTG | Identity and belonging; bought as a gift a lot |
| Mugs | $5.95 | Sublimation | Gifts and daily routine |
| Wall art | $5.39 | Digital printing | Decorating a space |
| Blankets and home | $13.30 | Sublimation | Decoration and affection; personalisation rules |
| Stickers | $2.20 | UV printing | Impulse and collecting; sold in packs |
| Tote bags | — | DTG | Everyday use and affiliation |
Entry costs read from Printify's public catalog (apparel, 10 July 2026) and Printful's (the rest, 1 August 2026). They are the cheapest blank in each category, so any margin built on them is a best case. Tote bags have no sourced cost yet.
Two things stand out. The cheapest products to make (stickers, wall art, mugs) are also the cheapest to buy, so they need volume or bundles. And the categories people buy as gifts (mugs, blankets, apparel) depend heavily on the calendar.
What about digital products?
Printables, templates and digital art have no production cost and no shipping, which is why they are a popular search. Etsy's listing and transaction fees still apply, and with no production barrier, competition is higher. ZEUS does not measure digital downloads yet, so we have no numbers of our own to show you here.
Narrow beats broad
"Funny mug" is a search almost nobody wins. "Mug for night-shift nurses" is one a new shop can. Specific phrases have less volume and much less competition, and the buyer who types them knows what they want. Build around a sub-niche and the long-tail phrases its buyers use, then widen once something sells.
Where ZEUS fits
The checks above work by hand. ZEUS does them every day for the niches you follow: it measures demand and competition, keeps the history to tell rising from peaked, and explains every score, including when there is not enough data to judge. That is the difference between a list of ideas and a decision.
