Print on Demand (POD)

Print on Demand (POD) is an e-commerce model where a third-party provider prints your design onto a blank product (a t-shirt, mug, poster…) and ships it directly to the buyer only after an order is placed. You never hold inventory or pay for stock upfront: your cost is deducted per sale.

For Etsy sellers, POD removes the biggest barrier to starting — capital. Your real work becomes design and market research: finding what people want, creating it, and listing it well. Your profit is the sale price minus the POD provider's cost and Etsy's fees.

Where the money goes

The economics are simple and unforgiving. On a $25 t-shirt with an $11 blank: Etsy takes about $2.83 in fees on an organic sale, leaving roughly $11.17. If that same sale arrives through Offsite Ads, another $3.75 disappears and you keep $7.42. The blank, not the platform, is your largest single cost, which is why supplier choice moves margin more than any fee optimisation.

What POD is good and bad at

Good at: testing many designs without inventory risk, entering seasonal niches late, and running a catalogue far larger than you could ever stock. Bad at: margin per unit, delivery speed, and control over quality once an order leaves your hands.

The mistake nearly everyone makes

Treating zero inventory as zero cost. Each listing costs $0.20 to publish and $0.20 again on every renewal, and a catalogue of 500 dead listings quietly bills you every month. Design time is the other invisible cost: fifty products nobody searches for took just as long to make as five that sell.
