Competition (Saturation)

How many sellers already target a keyword or niche — higher competition means harder to rank.

Competition, or saturation, is the number of existing listings fighting for the same keyword or niche. On Etsy it's approximated by how many active listings a search returns. High competition makes it harder for a new listing to reach the first page, no matter how good it is.

The sweet spot for new shops is proven demand with low competition — enough buyers searching, but few sellers serving them. That gap is where a well-made listing can rank quickly, and it's the core of what opportunity scoring tries to identify.

ExampleA search returning 800,000 listings is highly saturated; one returning 1,700 with steady demand is a far better opening.
