Etsy gives every listing 13 tags, and each tag can be up to 20 characters. Tags are one of the strongest ranking signals: they should be multi-word phrases matching how buyers actually search, not single generic words. Using all 13 with distinct long-tail phrases maximizes the queries you can appear for.

Effective tagging mixes intent ("gift for dad"), product ("dad t-shirt"), audience ("dog lover") and micro-trends. Avoid repeating the same root word across every tag, and never waste characters — a tag over 20 characters simply won't save as intended.

The rules, precisely

Thirteen tags per listing, twenty characters each including spaces. Multi-word phrases are expected rather than allowed. Etsy handles plurals for you, so "mug" and "mugs" do not need separate slots, and punctuation is stripped, so "t-shirt" and "t shirt" behave identically.

A worked example

"personalized dog gift" is 21 characters and will not fit. Splitting it into "personalized gift" (17) and "dog lover gift" (14) keeps both halves of the intent and buys you an extra entry point. That is the whole craft of tag writing: fitting real buyer phrases into twenty characters without losing what makes them specific.

The mistake nearly everyone makes

Writing one tag thirteen times. "dog mom shirt", "dog mom tshirt", "dog mom t shirt" and "shirt dog mom" are the same search pool wearing four hats. Thirteen tags should reach thirteen different shoppers: the product phrase, the long-tail version, the occasion, the recipient, the style, and a couple of very specific long shots.
